Agropoli

The ancient town of Agropoli (from Greek, "high city"), founded by Byzantines in 500 A.D, stands on the top of a promontory. The old town has remained mostly intact, including a substantial portion of the seventh-century old defensive walls and Aragonese entrance portal (Porta Aragonese). The old town can be accessed by the so called "scaloni" (big steps), a distinctive series of low and wide steps bringing to the Porta Aragonese and the Aragonese Castel. The Aragonese castle, built on the 6th century by Byzantines, still stands on top of the promontory. It has a triangular plan with three circular towers and a moat. The old town also conserves the Churches of the Holy Mary of Constantinople (16th century), San Marco and San Francesco. In the Municipal Antiquarian (Palazzo Civico delle Arti), there is a sizeable collection of archaeological finds, representing life in the area from prehistoric to medieval eras. From the Agropoli harbour a footpath leads along the coastal road to the suggestive bay of Trentova "Baia di Trentova".
