In a globalised world, it has become of huge importance to establish plans to coordinate the different governmental and health organisms in case of pandemics or epidemics to minimize its possible impact on population. On each country there are organized periodically pandemic drills to assure the good development of the plan in case of a real pandemic.
The goal of SIMDEMIC-TK is to create an innovative and effective teaching methodology with two main objectives. On the one hand to improve learners’ capabilities when taking decisions related to pandemics situations. On the other hand, SIMDEMIC-TK will help users to learn the main phases of the plan to follow and its objectives, the type of information to communicate and to which organisms address. The idea is to create a seriuos game to simulate a pandemic drill.
SIMDEMIC-TK will be based on the Spanish National Plan of Preparedness and Response in the presence of Pandemic Flu. This plan describes the activities that have to be prepared to response adequately. The plan follows the indications collected in the WHO Plan of April 2005.
The project will take methods originally designed to train personnel involved in the management of natural and industrial disasters, and adapt them to be used in pandemics/epidemics situations. The serious game will guide the learners through the six defined phases of the protocol using virtual reality to contextualize the situation and phases. The project will adopt a blended approach, mixing classical training with tutor-supervised virtual role-playing in an online 2D environment.
